Geometry 10-12; 11/30

We continued our work with triangle proofs today by going over the CPCTC proofs that we have been working on.  We answered 3-4 proof questions on the homework before taking a short quiz on 2 different proofs.  After the quiz, the students got started on their assignment.

Our work with triangles brought us to day #1 of how to write triangle proofs today.  We went through the first three methods that we will use:  SSS, ASA, and SAS.  These three postulates are ones that we practiced writing proofs with and then used to identify various drawings from the assignment.  We went over 3-4 examples together before getting started on the assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/29

Our topic today was to spend some time reviewing the rules of exponents and how to operate with them in various types of equations.  We went through simplifying, multiplying, dividing, and raising exponents to a power.  These are all review topics, but ones that we will need to be very good at to handle more complex problems down the road.

We continued our work with congruent triangles today by taking a look at how to use triangle proofs to find other corresponding parts.  We showed how to use the acronym CPCTC in these types of triangle proofs in order to answer the given question.  We went through 2-3 examples together before we got started on the assignment.

We started a new unit today on triangles.  We worked with identifying the corresponding parts of congruent figures/triangles today.  We learned how to write congruence statements and how to correctly order the vertices of any figures that we ran into.  The students went through 3-4 examples together before getting started on their assignment.

The students turned in their matrices unit review sheets and unit entry tasks to begin the period today.  They then spent the remainder of the period taking the matrices unit test.

We continued our work with congruent triangle proofs today by taking a look at how to completely fill out a triangle proof on both sides.  We worked through 3 together and then the students got started on their assignment.

We started our work today on writing triangle proofs.  We now have 5 methods to choose from, so we will be practicing on a variety of different diagrams to prove that 2 triangles are congruent.  We worked through 3 together before getting started on the homework assignment.

We went over the homework from last night and practiced one more similarity and scale factor problem together.  We then went over 4 of "the most missed topics" on this test together before getting started on the chapter review.  The answers to the review sheet are posted on the class canvas website.  Chapter 4 test on transformations is tomorrow.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/26

Today's topic focused on using matrices and determinants to solve word problems.  We went over 3 word problems together and used a different method in each case.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We continued our work with congruent triangles today by taking a look at the last two methods that we will use to prove that two triangles are congruent.  The HL theorem and the AAS Postulate are the last two congruent triangle methods that we went through today.  We went over 3-4 examples together before getting started on the assignment.

Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break!  We wrapped up the last section of our study of transformations today by taking a look at the wide variety of similarity transformations that are possible.  We working on performing transformations from a variety of directions, and we also went over how to identify transformations from figures already drawn on a grid.  After 2-3 examples, the students got started on their assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/21

We went over the homework assignment together and I answered any questions that students had.  The students then got to work on their first review assignment for the unit test next week.

Assignment:  page 609;  #1-12 all;   on #5 and #7 , solve the system using both Cramer's rule and Augmented matrices;  on #11, solve the system of equations using matrices  (any method you choose)

We went through an entry task review to start off the period.  Working with congruent pairs of triangles is a skill that we will continue to use as our study of chapter 4 moves forward.  The remainder of the period we worked on an activity involving various geometry figures and toothpicks.  The students were working to solve various toothpick puzzles that they were creating.

Our topic today focused on how to work with scale factors and similar figures.  We went over how to calculate a scale factor from two different figures and then how to use it to determine various other dimensions of the figures.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/20

Our class today involved using matrices and determinants to work with both geometry and algebra topics from previous classes.  The relationships in a determinant were shown to be used in figuring out both the area of triangles and the equations of lines if you were given the coordinates first.  We went through 3-4 examples together before the students got started on their assignment.

We went through a few review problems today before taking our chapter 4 quiz on congruent triangles.  The students took the remainder of the period to finish the quiz.

Our work today focused on the last of our transformations:  a dilation.  We went over the terminology and notation associated with dilations using both notes and an exploration activity online.  We then went through how to graph and calculate with dilations and the figures that they create.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/19

Our study today focused on how to determine the inverse of a matrix.  This inverse can then be used to solve systems of equations.  We identified what the identity matrix was and how to use it to determine the solutions of a system of equations.


Assignment:  page 591;  #1-4, 6-8;  page 580;  #9-14;  solve all problems using the inverse of the matrices.

We continued our work with spotting the corresponding parts of congruent triangles.  Listing the corresponding parts on a drawing and then identifying the SSS, ASA, and SAS postulates are what we practiced on today.  We then got to work on our review of the first part of chapter 4 in preparation for the chapter 4 quiz tomorrow.

We continued our work with transformations today by taking a look at how compositions of reflections in lines work.  We went through how to work with both parallel and intersecting lines, as well as introducing the concept of writing a congruence statement for figures that have been transformed.  Matching up the letters in the correct order was an important factor to understand.

We continued our work with congruent triangles today by going over several more drawings together to determine if they fit the mold of ASA, SSS, or SAS.  The students then got started on their assignment towards the end of the period.

The students turned in their matrix quiz reviews to start the period.  They then took the remainder of the period to take the matrix unit quiz.

We began the process of working on triangle proofs today by taking a look at three of the ways that triangles can be proven to be congruent.  We went over the SSS postulate, the ASA postulate, and the SAS postulate together.  After a few examples, the students began going over their assignment of drawing identification of various triangle pairs.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/14

We spent a little time at the beginning of the period reviewing various vocabulary words that pertain to matrices, dimensions, and elements of matrices.  We also went over 2-3 questions on last night's homework during the class period as well.  Our review today focused on verbalizing a couple of problems to each other before getting started on working through the rest of the review.

We continued our study of triangles today by taking a look at congruent triangles and their corresponding parts today.  We went through how to determine the congruent parts on a triangle and then used these congruent parts to work through some calculations.  We went over 4-5 examples together before getting started on the assignment.

We spent some time at the beginning of the period reviewing several of the main topics that we have covered with transformations.  We worked through a few examples together before the students got started on their review assignment for the quiz tomorrow.

We continued our work with matrices today by going over the last method for solving matrices:  the basket weaving method.  This method can be used with Cramer's rule to find the value of each determinant.  We went over a few together and then the students got to work on their assignment in which they practiced using this new method.

We continued our work today with triangles by going over the triangle sum theorem and the exterior angles theorem.  Both of these facts can be used as helpful shortcuts in solving triangle problems and calculations.  We also reviewed the various types of triangles from last week's vocabulary words.

Today's topic involved the rules of rotation for clockwise rotations and also figuring out how to work with rotational symmetry.  We viewed several pictures to determine both the order and the rotational symmetries of the various figures that were viewed.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We answered some homework questions today and then got started on our assignment for the weekend.  More practice with the two methods of solving matrices.

We went over our homework together and answered several questions about calculating with triangles.  We then got to work on another practice assignment of dealing with determining angles in triangles.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/8

We continued our work with Cramer's Rule today by taking a look at how to work with 3x3 matrices.  We went through how to find a determinant of a 3x3 and then how to use these determinants to solve an augmented 3x3 matrix.  We went through a couple of examples together before the students got started on their assignment.

We started our new unit today of working with different types of triangles.  We went over several vocabulary words in regards to the different side lengths and different angle measures of the triangles that we will encounter.  We also went over how to calculate with the angles of triangles and their sum of 180 degrees.

We continued our work with transformations today by taking a look at how rotations work.  We went over the notation and the various pieces of information necessary to successfully rotate an object.  We then went over three of the basic rules of rotation that involved angles of 90, 180, and 270 degrees.  The students then went through a couple of figure rotations with me before getting started on their homework.

Honors Algebra 2; 11/7

We continued our work with matrices today by taking a look at another way to solve them.  This method involves using determinants, and we demonstrated how to find these in 2x2 matrices.  We went over the method known as Cramer's Rule in order to solve the matrices and demonstrated a few examples before the students got started on their homework.

We spent a few minutes reviewing together at the beginning of the period before passing out the chapter 3 test.  The students had the period to work on the test.

Our work in class today focused on working with compositions of translations.  A couple of days ago we combined two translations.  Today we worked on combining two reflections or combining a reflection and a translation.  We went through a couple of these together.  We also took a look at how line symmetry applies to the work that we are doing with reflection.  We went over how to determine line symmetry and viewed several different pictures in the process.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We spent another day in class going over how to perform row operations on various matrices in order to solve them.  We went through a couple more examples together before getting started on our assignment for today....a matrices worksheet

We wrapped up our study of parallel lines and line equations today by reviewing in class for the chapter 3 test tomorrow.  We went over several problems in pairs and then had a good chunk of time to work on our review packet in class.

We continued our work with matrices today by going over how to solve matrices by using row operations to get the matrix into row eschelon form.  This method works on any type of matrix, and we went over 2-3 examples together before the students got started on their assignment.

We started our review of chapter 3 today by reviewing perpendicular and parallel lines.  The slopes of these lines and how to write equations from the slopes is a key factor in our unit of study.  We went through several examples together before getting started on our first test review sheet.

We continued our work with translations today by demonstrating what a composition of translations is, and how to go about adding vectors together.  We went through a few examples before using our online graphing tool to perform several compositions.  The students then got to work on their assignment.

We started the next unit today by taking a look at how to work with matrices.  Today's lesson focused on the basics of the terms involved with matrices  (dimensions, rows, columns, etc) and how to work with some basic operations involving matrices.

We went through a few more examples of how to work with perpendicular and parallel lines together as a class.  The students then got to work on more practice with these skills.

Our topic today involved the notation of translations.  We introduced the concept of what a vector is and how vectors are used to indicate translations.  We learned the notation for a vector, as well as what an image and preimage are.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We continued our work with parallel and perpendicular lines today by going over how to graph these and manipulate different types of line equations to easily determine the slope of a line.  The students got started on their assignment towards the end of the period.

We spent some time today making sure everyone could log on to the bigideasmath website that we will be using for the next 2 chapters.  This is where our online textbook is.  We then spent some time getting familiar with how to use a graphing tool that this online resource contains.  We went over how to translate a number of different figures for our assignment.  This assignment is detailed on canvas under "graphing software assignment".  There is also a set of instructions on canvas for how to make sure you are able to login and access the online textbook.
