Algebra 10-12 assignment; May 29

We went over our homework today and then went through a review of graphing different types of functions.  We went over linear, quadratic (parabolas), and absolute value graphs.  We then spent some time working on the methods for shifting graphs on the coordinate axes.  The students then worked on graphing some of these shifts as well as working through a review of exponents.

Geometry assignment; May 28

We went over our homework in class today and did a short entry task before getting started on our third and final transformation.  Today we worked with rotations and used patty paper to show how these transformations can be accomplished on a graph.  I went through a couple of examples with the students together before they got started on their assignment independently.

We worked on word problems involving systems of equations today in class.  We went over several together and then the students had a chance to work independently on their own.

After the long weekend, we got back to work reviewing for the EOC today by going over solving systems of equations.  We worked on both solving by graphing and solving by elimination between two variables.  The examples we did in class together then helped the students get started on their homework before the end of the period.

After the long weekend, we went back to work today with our second coordinate transformation.  We worked on reflections today, identifying the line of reflection first and then making the necessary image from the original.  We went over several examples together in class before the students got started on their homework.

Geometry assignment; May 21

We went over our homework before going through the last topic on our review of linear equations.  We went over several examples with the point slope equation of lines before having the students get started on their homework.  The assignment deals with converting a variety of information into the slope intercept form of linear equations.

Today's work centered on scatter plots and using line equations to draw lines of best fits on graphs.  We went over two large problems together that are EOC samples and then had a chance to work on an additional problem in order to get the homework started.

This was our second day of reviewing topics dealing with line equations.  Today's work centered on graphing systems of equations and also using the elimination to solve systems of equations.  We went over several examples together as a class before getting started on our assignment.

Geometry assignment; May 19

We went over our homework today before beginning the next topic.  Today we reviewed how to graph and calculate with two different forms of linear equations.  The line equations we reviewed were the slope intercept form and the standard form of a line.  Both of these topics were covered in algebra, yet also apply in dealing with coordinate geometry.  The students got started working on their assignment towards the end of the period.

After going our homework and entry task, the students took a quiz on solving quadratics and working with the quadratic formula.  The quiz took most of the rest of the period.  After the quiz, the students then got started on their homework.

We went over our homework on midpoints before taking the quiz on the first part of chapter 13 today.  The quiz took most of the rest of the period.  Once they were done with the quiz, the students then got started working on their homework assignment.

Geometry assignment; May 15

We went over a couple of other quiz prep questions in our entry task today before going over the homework.  Today's topic of study focused on how to use the midpoint formula and its various applications.  We went over 4-5 examples together before getting started on our homework in class.

We will have a quiz on sections 13.1 - 13.5 tomorrow .

We went over the quadratic formula again during our entry task, giving the students another chance to see how it is applied.  We then spent the first part of the period working on how to solve various formulas for a given variable.  Some the formulas were quadratics, while others were linear equations.  After going through several problems together, the students then got to work on their own on their assignment.

Geometry assignment; May 14

We went over an entry task together before going over the homework.  We then took a look at the slope connection between parallel and perpendicular lines.  We graphed several figures in working with these two types of lines together before getting started on the homework.

We continued working with the quadratic formula today, going over how to approximate values for the roots and to use the formula when the not all the values for a, b, and c are known.  We did three problems together and then worked the rest of the period completing the homework assignment.

We went over the homework today before taking a look at how the quadratic formula is used to solve equations.  We went through 2-3 examples together before the students got started on their homework.

We went over our test from last week, and then took questions about the homework.  The lesson today focused on calculating the slope of various line segments, and also being able to identify the different types of slopes  ( positive, negative, zero, and undefined ).  The students got started on their assignment at the end of the period.

Geometry assignment; May 12

We began the day by going over the schedule for the rest of the school year as we took a look at the finals week schedule and what chapters of study remain for us to cover.  We then began our next chapter on coordinate geometry.  The topics that we took a look at today involved using the distance formula to prove various geometric facts and also working with the distance formula to generate the equation for a circle on a coordinate grid.

We went over our entry task and homework today before continuing our work with quadratics.  We worked with solving more types of quadratics in various forms today.  The skill of working with radicals and finding both a positive and negative solution for perfect squares was used to solve the problems we worked on.  The students got started on their assignment at the end of the period.

We took the Chapter 12 test today on the volume and surface area of solid objects.

After going over our entry task and review sheet, we spent the first part of the period taking the test on our radicals unit.  After the test was done, the students then worked on an assignment dealing with simplifying radicals.

We spent time in class today reviewing for the Chapter 12 test tomorrow.  We worked through several homework problems and then went over a few new practice problems together.  The students then got started working on their review sheet during the last part of the period.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; May 7

After going over the homework and an entry task together, we spent time reviewing the various topics we had covered during our unit on radicals.  After going over several problems together, the students then worked independently on their review sheets.  Most the students finished and checked their work before leaving class.

After going over the homework, we spent time working on the final section of chapter 12.  The topic for today was dealing with the ratios among similar solid objects.  The ratio between single dimensions  (height, slant height, perimeter, etc. is equal to the scale factor.  The area ratio is equal to the scale factor squared.  The volume ratio is equal to the scale factor cubed.  We did a few sample problems involving these ratios together before getting started on our homework.

After going over our homework, we spent time working through the next section on solid objects today.  Today's topic was how to calculate the surface area and volume of a sphere.  We went through a few examples together before getting started on the homework.

After going over our homework and entry task today, we spent time talking about how to solve equations with radical expressions.  The new step was to square both sides once the radical expression has been isolated.  Once several problems have been worked through, the students got started on their homework in class.

We went over our quiz together before starting today's lesson.  Today we focused on calculations involving pyramids.  We went over the lateral area, total area, and volume of a pyramid with several examples before getting started on our homework in class.

We went over our quiz today in class before getting started on today's lesson.  Today's lesson focused on being able to add and subtract radical expressions.  We worked to get like radicals in the equations first, before then adding and subtracting to finish the problem.  We went through several examples in class together before getting started on the homework assignment.

We went over our homework today first that dealt with calculations with cones.  After the homework was turned in, the students then got started on their Chapter 12 quiz.  Once they finished the quiz, the students got started on their homework assignment.

We went over our homework and reviewed the different topics that we studied this week before taking our quiz.  The quiz was over simplifying, multiplying, and dividing radicals.  After the quiz was over, the students then got started working on their assignment for Monday.

We went through another entry task today practicing the use of our various formulas.  We then spent some time taking a look at some animations of how cones are constructed from triangles and how they are related to cylinders.  The class got some new formulas for how to work with cones and then did a couple of sample problems together before getting started on the homework.

Algebra 10-12 assignment, May 1

After going over our entry task and homework, the lesson for today focused on dividing radicals.  We simplified several together just using our knowledge of mental math and perfect squares.  We then spent some time reducing fractions under the radical before then taking out the perfect squares.  The last portion of the lesson dealt with rationalizing the denominator.  We will continue to work on this skill on into next week as well.  The students then got a start on their homework.

We went over our homework and did an entry task before getting started on the lesson today.  Today's topic dealt with finding the surface area and volume of a cylinder.  We did a few examples together to remind the students of the previous area work we had done before getting a good start on the homework in class.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; April 30

After going over our entry task and homework, we took a look at how radical expressions are multiplied today in class.  The steps given were to  1.  multiply the numbers together outside the radicals    2.  multiply the numbers together inside the radicals    3.  simplify the numbers inside the radicals by factoring out perfect squares.  

We did several examples together before getting a good start on the homework in class.
