Geometry assignment; 5/29

Today's topic included how to calculate areas and volumes of cylinders.  We went over a couple of examples together and then added some formulas to the notecard.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We started a mini-unit today on coordinate transformations.  We went over the first of these transformations today in class:  translations.  We went over 4-5 examples together in class before getting started on the homework assignment.

Geometry assignment; 5/28

We continued our work with volume today by going over how to handle different types of regular pyramids.  The concept of the slant height was introduced and we went over a couple of problems together in how to use this dimension in pyramid problems.

The students took session 3 of the algebra EOC today in class.  This was the last session of the test and we will be back to a normal schedule tomorrow.

Geometry assignment; 5/27

We continued our work with prisms today by going over a wider variety of shapes and including some shortcuts in how to complete the problems.  We went over two more examples together before getting started on the homework assignment.

Determine the area of the base (B), volume (V), lateral area (L.A.) and total area (T.A) for each question.

Geometry assignment; 5/26

We began a new unit on volume and area of solid objects today.  This is our first study that includes 3-dimensional figures.  We went through the area and volume calculations associated with prisms today.  New terms that were introduced were lateral faces, lateral edges, lateral area, and total area.  We continue to use the area formulas that we learned in a previous chapter.

Geometry assignment; 5/22

We are getting ready to start our final chapter of the year....Chapter 12.  In order to do this, the students need to remind themselves of some area formulas that we have studied a couple of chapters ago.  The goal of today in class was to review those formulas by going through some formula problems from the previous chapter.

The students took a unit test today on Statistics and Probability.  After the test, they worked on an extra credit assignment if they chose to.

We went over the transformations review packet together before taking the transformations quiz today.  The students had the period to work on the quiz and then could do an extra credit puzzle afterwards if they chose to...

We went over a few review questions on probability together to wrap up our unit on statistics and probability.  We then talked about the schedule for the EOC next week and the different review materials that the students have to use.  I passed out packets to those students who will be taking the EOC exam next week.  We then did a little review on the subject of quadratics and the quadratic equation before getting started on an assignment towards the end of the period.

Geometry assignment; 5/18 and 5/19

We spent time reviewing the 4 different types of transformations today in class before working on the transformations review sheet during the last half of the period.  Quiz on transformations is tomorrow.

We went over our homework assignment today before getting started on our final topic with statistics and probability.  We talked about how to use probability concepts with decks of cards, dice, and various number wheels.  Equally likely events and a combination of events were also discussed as to how they effect the probability of certain scenarios.

Geometry assignment; 5/15

We went through our final transformation topic today by talking about rotations.  We worked with only 90 degree multiples of rotations, and used patty paper to help us begin to see patterns in what the rotations are.  We went through 3-4 examples together before the students got started on their assignment.

We continued working with scatter plots today and how to use them to make predictions from data that is not included in the data table.  We went through 2-3 problems together before getting started on the homework assignment.

Our third transformation today involved going over how to dilate figures.  We saw the connection to similar figures and a scale factor as we did this, and we went over several examples together before getting started on the homework.

We continued our study of statistics today by going over how to make and interpret scatter plot diagrams.  We showed the difference between positive and negative correlation and then went over a few examples together before getting started on the homework.

We worked on the 2nd type of transformation today in class:  translations and glide reflections.  We went over several examples of how to do this particular transformation and how vectors are associated with it.  The students then got started on their assignment at the end of the period.

We continued our study of statistics and displaying data today by going over line plots and box and whisker plots.  These two types of diagrams were shown and we went over a few problems together before the students got started on their assignment.

Geometry assignment; 5/12

We went over the schedule for the remainder of the year as we got started today and pointed out the various review days and finals that are coming up.  We then got started with the lesson for the day which dealt with transformations.  These types of figure movements can be determined in a variety of ways.  Today's focus was on reflections, so we went over several problems together in how to reflect figures across lines and determine the rule for a particular reflection.

The students then got started on their homework at the end of the period.

We continued our work with statistics today by taking a look at how to display data using stem and leaf plots and frequency distributions.  We went over how to calculate intervals for frequency diagrams in putting larger groups of numbers together.  The students then got started on their homework.

After collecting the review assignment for chapter 13 to begin the period, the students took the Chapter 13 test in class today.  After the test, the students were able work on an extra credit opportunity if they chose to do so.  The extra credit assignment is due on Wednesday, May 13.

We started a new unit today that deals with statistics and probability.  There are a few topics in these areas that we will work on in preparation for the Algebra EOC that is coming up on May 26, 27, and 28.  Today's lesson focused on measures of central tendency and working with the mean, median, mode, range, and any outliers that might be present.  We went through a few examples together before the students got started on the assignment.

We went through 3 different problems together today in getting ready for Monday's test.  The problems involved writing the equation of a circle from two points and then a couple of coordinate proofs.  At the end of the period, the students then got started working on a review assignment out of the book.

We covered our final section in chapter 13 today by going over how to write linear equations from a variety of information sources.  We introduced the point-slope equation and then went through several examples together before we got started on the homework.

We continued our work with systems of equations today by reviewing how to solve a system without graphing.  We went over the substitution and elimination methods together and showed 4-5 examples.  The students then got started on their homework assignment.

Our topic today focused on word problems involving coins and money (ticket prices).  We went over 3-4 examples together and then did a few of the homework problems together as well.  The students then got started on the last of their homework problems on their own at the end of the period.

We spent our second day of linear equations by working on systems of equations and where they intersect.  All the questions today involve graphing two lines and deciding where they intersect (or if they do) and what the solution is.  We went through several examples together before the students got started on their homework.

We continued our work with systems of equations and word problems today by going over how to work with motion problems.  There are three types of motion problems and we demonstrated each type before doing some homework problems together.  The students then used the last part of the period to work on their assignment.

Geometry assignment; 5/4

The students got back their quizzes from last week today and then we continued to work through our chapter on coordinate geometry.  Today's topic focused on how to graph lines from linear equations.  We went over the slope-intercept form, the standard form using intercepts, and both horizontal and vertical lines.  These are all algebra review concepts, but ones that we use in this chapter as well to draw figures from coordinates.

We continued to work with systems of equations and word problems today.  The focus today was to be able to set up and solve money and rate problems.  These types of problems are added to the age problems we worked on last Friday.  We went through several examples together before the students worked on them individually.

Geometry assignment; 5/1

We continued on with coordinate geometry today by working through the midpoint formula.  We had addressed this earlier in the year, but we reviewed the concept and added some more content now that we have more information to use.  We went through several examples of finding midpoints from two points, finding endpoints when given the midpoint and the other endpoint, and using the midpoint concept to proved that the diagonals of a parallelogram bisect.  The students then got started on their homework.

We started working on how to use systems of equations to solve a variety of problem types today.  The difficult part is to translate the problem into equations that can then be solved.  We went over a few examples together before starting to work through the homework together as well.
