Algebra 10-12 assignment; 9/30

We went over our quiz today and then spent some time working on ratio and proportion problems.  These will be followed up with some word problems tomorrow.  We then got started on our assignment.

The equations test will take place on Friday of this week.

We went over our conditionals quiz from last week and reviewed angle calculations by going over homework.  We then spent some time talking about perpendicular lines and some elementary proofs that can be worked out using the definition of perpendicular.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 9/27

We went over our homework on clearing decimals in equations before then taking our second equations quiz.  There is no homework for the weekend.


Geometry assignment; 9/27

We spent some time working on angle calculations involving complementary, supplementary, and vertical angles today.  The students then had some time to finish up their proof packets or complete their homework before the end of class.

We continued our work with the tools of writing proofs today, going over what vertical angles are and how they are always congruent in geometry.  We also spent some time going over a couple more practice proofs together before working on the proof packet that is due tomorrow.

We continued working with decimal equations today, getting further practice of clearing equations with decimals and also working through the normal progression of solving equations just using numbers with decimals.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 9/24

We continued working on clearing fractions today by going over an entry task and our homework together.  The bulk of the class time was spent in a partner activity doing equations together and then checking the results.  This was due before the end of the period.  The homework was then started, which was 8 more problems on a worksheet that dealt with clearing fractions from equations.

Geometry assignment; 9/24

We spent some time reviewing conditionals during our entry task today before going over homework.  We continued working through the process of identifying reasons for geometric proofs in class today by showing the proof for two theorems.  The students then spent some time working on a proof packet that will be due on Friday.

We began the process of talking about geometric proofs today by going over 4 of them together in class.  We will be taking a look at several geometric proofs in the days to come this week as we move toward the end of chapter 2.

We will be having a quiz on Wednesday, Sept. 25 on algebraic proofs and conditional statements.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 9/20

We spent time reviewing two-step equations and equations with variables on both sides today before taking our first quiz on equations.

After the quiz, the students began to work on their homework, which is a worksheet on solving equations with variables on two sides.

We spent some time in class going over the homework on the various types of conditional statements.  We will have a short quiz on these types of statements at the beginning of next week  (Tuesday).

Geometry assignment; 9/19

We continued our discussion of conditional statements today, demonstrating what a biconditional statement is and then talked about the negation of conditional statements.  We discussed the terms inverse and contrapositive before getting started on our assignment---practice writing conditionals.  

We also got back and went over our first test.

Our work in class today consisted of going over equations that involve variables on both sides.  Moving the smaller variable first and then clearing any parentheses that are in the equation were topics that we discussed and practiced in class.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 9/18

The topic for today in working with equations was solving 2-step equations.  Using the skills of cross multiplying, applying the correct inverses, and using the distributive property are the things we worked on today.

We will have an equations quiz on Friday after going over more multi-step equations tomorrow in class.

We continued our discussion of logic and reasoning today, taking some notes on various terms:  conditionals, if-then statements, counterexamples, and converses.  We looked at several different examples before beginning the homework.

We began our second chapter today by introducing the topic of deductive reasoning.  We took a look at a courtroom video clip, talked about how we logically reason through decisions, and then worked on some logic puzzles together in class.

The students took an online assessment test today called the SMI.  This replaces the MAP test.  Once the student were done, they started working on their assignment in class.

Geometry assignment; 9/13

We went through our final practice exercises for the upcoming test on Monday, 9/16.  The bulk of the day was spent working on completing the model building and drawing exercise we started yesterday.  The models needed to be completed in class today, but the questions on the back of the worksheet can be answered and turned in on Monday.

I gave out a review sheet for the first chapter.  The student can use this to help them study for the test on Monday.  They will turn it in on Monday before taking the test.  We won't go over the review guide in class on Monday, so I will post the answers to the questions on Sunday afternoon for the students to check their answers.

We took our unit 1 test in class today.  The intial part involved a mental math exercise using addition and subtraction.  The rest of the test involved calculator use.

Geometry assignment; 9/12

We spent time in class today going through a few 3-D modeling exercises to aid in understanding the postulates for points, lines, and planes.  The students then began work on a model building activity that also involves drawing specific figures.  We will finish this activity up tomorrow in class.

We spent time in class today reviewing various mental math skills as well as reviewing for the test tomorrow.  The review sheet that the students worked on class is a mirror of the test that will take place tomorrow.  We went over part of the review sheet in class as the students worked on it together.  The rest of the review sheet they have as homework.

The students will be able to use their number property cards for reference on the test tomorrow.

Geometry assignment; 9/11

We spent time in class today reviewing some angle calculation problems and going over homework.  We also took some time to introduce the additional postulates about points lines and planes that are found in the first chapter.  The students spent time drawing out the postulates and reviewing their drawing and symbol writing skills.

We spent time reviewing the properties of real numbers today through an exercise of making and using flash cards.  We also reviewed some more mental math facts in preparation for our upcoming test.

Geometry assignment; 9/10

We spent time in class today working through the angle addition postulate and more of the calculations that are involved in working with angles.  The students have an assignment out of the book as well as a review worksheet that they started in class.

Upcoming events:   We will be wrapping up the first chapter on Friday of this week with a review.  That means that the chapter 1 test will be taking place on Monday, Sept. 16.

We spent time in class today continuing to review mental math skills with a couple of different activities.  The lesson for today focused on how to use the distributive property in working with both number values and variables.

Geometry assignment; 9/5

We spent time going over the distance formula calculations in class, as well as doing more drawing practice and working with equations that involve combining algebra and geometry.

We also introduced the topic of the midpoint formula and showed how this formula can also be used to combine geometry with what we already know about algebra.

Today we skipped ahead in the book somewhat to touch briefly on the distance formula.  We will use this later on in the year, but this helps us make the connection between algebra and geometry fairly early on.

We spent some time in class today going over the way to classify numbers into their various categories.  Natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers are the different categories we took a look at.  We also went over the process for comparing rational numbers.  The best way is to use a number line and then convert everything to a decimal.
