Our work with right triangles focused on how to solve right triangles today.  We went through how to determine all the side lengths and all the angle measurements in any right triangle in which we are given three pieces of information.  We went through a few examples together of these types of problems.  We also introduced how to work through trig application problems.  These word problems involved setting up a problem from a given description and drawing a triangle that we can use.  We went over how to work with angles of depression, angles of elevation, and % grades of roads.  After a few of these examples, the students then got started on their assignment.

We spent the first part of period today reviewing how to do some basic triangle proofs.  These are problems that we will review some more for the upcoming final.  We then went over how to work with similarity proofs.  The first postulate that we went over was the AA postulate for similar triangles.  We also did some calculations to review what we have already worked on with similar triangles.

Assignment:  section 7-4;  page 256;  CE  #1-8 all;   page 257-258;  WE  #1-7, 10-13, 15, 17, 21, 23

Honors Geometry; 1/12

We reviewed several homework problems together on the pythagorean theorem before moving on into today's lesson.  We learned a little about the history of the pythagorean theorem and how it can be proved in different ways without numbers.  We also worked with the converse of the theorem today to show how it can be used to classify triangles as either right, acute, or obtuse.

Assignment:  section 8-3;  page 296;  CE  #1-6, 9, 10;   page 297;  WE  #1-14

Monday, January 11, 2016

Geometry; 1/11

We went over our chapter 7 quiz review sheet to start the period.  If students had any more questions, they could get them answered here before taking the quiz.  The rest of the period involved the students taking the chapter 7 quiz in class.  They could work on an extra credit puzzle when they were finished if they chose to.

Assignment:  extra credit puzzle option

Honors Geometry; 1/11

We continued our study of right triangles today by going over how to use the pythagorean theorem.  The students have all seen this theorem before, so we did a couple of foundational problems to start with before going through 3-4 more complex examples.  We will use this theorem a lot this chapter, so having a good knowledge of how it works is important.

Sunday, January 10, 2016

Geometry; 1/8

We continued our work on similar triangles today.  We reviewed some of the properties of proportions from earlier in the week before going over 3-4 types of problems involving similar triangles that overlap.  The end of the period found the students working on a review sheet for the quiz on Monday.  We will go over this review sheet before the quiz on Monday.

Assignment:  section 7-1 to 7-3 review sheet

Honors Geometry; 1/8

We continued our work with right triangles and similarity today by going through a few more problems together to help memorize the ratios for the geometric means.  Using the note card will help, yet the goal is to get these ratios memorized.   The students got started on their assignment towards the end of the period.

Assignment:  Similarity in Right Triangles WS;  #1-25 all

Thursday, January 7, 2016

Geometry; 1/7

We continued our study of similarity today by taking a look at how word problems can be translated into drawings of similar figures.  We went through several different examples before getting started on the assignment.  The actual calculations are rather short, yet the skill of setting up the problem from the diagram is the skill we focused on.

Assignment:  Similarity Drawings worksheet +  page 252;  Self-Test 1;  #1-10

Honors Geometry; 1/7

Today's lesson focused on the start of our study of right triangles.  We looked at how similarity and right triangles are related in a particular diagram.  We introduced the concept of the geometric mean in a drawing and how different parts of right triangles can be calculated using a series of similarity ratios.  We made a note card to help us in the process of learning these ratios.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Assignment:  section 8-1;  page 288;  #1-26 all

Wednesday, January 6, 2016

Geometry; 1/6

We spent a short time today going over our homework before beginning the lesson.  Today's topic involved taking a look at what similar figures are and how calculations can be handled with them.  We introduced the vocabulary word "scale factor" and how to match up corresponding sides in various figures.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Assignment:  section 7-3;  page 250;  CE #1-4, 10;   page 251;  CE #15-22 all

Honors Geometry; 1/6

We spent some time today going over our homework before introducing the next lesson.  This was our third day of reviewing how to work with radical expressions.  Today we covered how to add and subtract radicals, as well as how to work with problems that involve all 4 operations at once.  The students had a short time to begin the assignment due to the 2-hour delay schedule.

Assignment:    Radicals Review WS #3;   #1-43 odds

Geometry; 1/5

We continued working with ratios today by combining them into proportions.  We reviewed several algebra skills in how to solve proportions to start off with.  We then went over some of the different properties of proportions that we will use throughout this chapter.  The final topic we covered was how to set up ratios and proportions from diagrams.  Once the proportions were set up, we then worked to solve them and find the desired dimension.  After the lesson, the students got started on their assignment.

Assignment:  Section 7-2;  page 247-248;  WE  #1-25 all, 27, 33, 35

Honors Geometry; 1/5

We continued our work with radicals today by going over how to multiply and divide radicals.  We also spent time reviewing how to rationalize the denominator for various radical expressions.  We went over several examples together before getting started on the assignment.

Assignment:  Radicals Review worksheet #2

Monday, January 4, 2016

Geometry; 1/4

Happy New Year and welcome back to school.  We went over a quick overview of the schedule for the next few weeks before getting started on today's lesson.  We started our study of similarity today by taking a look at how to work with ratios.  This is an algebra skill, yet one that we need to link to geometric figures as we move forward.  We did several examples of reducing ratios, converting to the proper units, and also working with extended ratios before the students got started on their homework.
