Honors Algebra 2; 3/21

Today's lesson involving working backwards with quadratics.  In our lesson today we started with the solutions and went through the process of how to determine the original quadratic.  We also demonstrated what a discriminant is and how it is used to find out what kind of solutions that will result from a quadratic equation.

Today's topic was working on completing solving a right triangle  (all sides and angles), along with finishing up the arctan function.  We went through 3-4 examples together before getting started on the assignment.

We continued our work with trig ratios today by taking a look at the cosine and tangent ratios.  We went through how each of these ratios work and also introduced the SOH CAH TOA acronym that can help students remember what each ratio stands for.

We continued working on completing the square skills today by taking a look at equations in which the leading coefficient is not 1.  Knowing how to factor these equations first and then complete the square was the skill that we demonstrated and worked on.  After 3-4 practice examples with the students, they got started on their assignment.

We continued to work with the trig ratios today by taking a look at the arccos function.  We went through 3-4 examples of the different tools that we have to work with in solving right triangle problems before getting started on the assignment.

The topic today was an introductions to trigonometry.  We went over was trig is and the first of the three ratios we will cover.  We used the sine ratio to determine missing sides and also the inverse sine function to determine angles.  We went through 3-4 examples before getting started on the assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 3/19

We continued our work with quadratics today by taking a look at another tool to solve for x.  We have used factoring, the quadratic formula, and using radicals so far.  Today's skill was completing the square.  We went through 4-5 examples of how to complete the square on various quadratics.  Our goal today was to complete the square while working with a leading coefficient of 1.  After the examples were complete, the students then got to work on their assignment.

We continued our work with trigonometry by showing how the angles can be found using the inverse function of the sine.  We went over how to use both the reference table and the calculator to do this, and then the students had time to practice in class on their homework assignment.

Today's class period was spent taking the quiz on right triangles and the pythagorean theorem.  We went over a few questions on the review to start class before the students turned them in .  The rest of the time was spent taking the quiz.

Honors Algebra 2; 3/18

Today was the first day of our unit on quadratics.  We reviewed the concept of how to solve quadratics by factoring and also using square roots.  We then introduced the use of the quadratic equation as another tool to solve quadratics.  We went through examples involving both real and imaginary solutions before the students got started on their assignment.

Today's lesson involved introducing and working with the tangent ratio.  We reviewed the other two ratios as we incorporated the skills of the working with the tangent into our math tool box.  The students spent the last part of the period working on their assignment.

Today's lesson involved reviewing for the quiz on the pythagorean theorem and special right triangles.  We worked through several problems in partners to start off the review.  The students then spent the last part of the period working on the review assignment on their own.  The answers to the review will be posted on Canvas later this afternoon

We went over 2 more examples today of different types of graphing rational expressions.  After this, the students spent the rest of the period working on their review sheet for tomorrow's quiz.

Today's lesson was an introduction to trigonometry and how the sine ratio works in right triangles.  We went over several examples and watched a short video of how trig is used in a variety of situations in our world today.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Today's lesson dealt with going over the relationships in special right triangles.  We demonstrated the 45-45-90 triangles and the 30-60-90 triangles.  We went through 5-6 examples of each before the students got started on their assignment.

The lesson today focused on the converse of the pythagorean theorem.  We went over its use and the different types of triangles that can be determined from it.  We also watched a brief history of the pythagorean theorem video.

This was a 3 hour delay day due to the snow and ice on the roads.  We went over the homework and then the students spent the shortened period working on  additional problems involving graphing rational expressions.

We started our next unit today by taking a look at how the pythagorean theorem in used when working with right triangles.  The lesson also focused on how right triangles can be found in a variety of other shapes, and properties such as area and perimeter can be calculated using the pythagorean theorem.

Today's lesson focused on using similarity between right triangles.  We went over how to develop three different formula types to use with these problems.  We went over how to read the drawings and then demonstrated a couple of problems together.  The students then got started on their assignment.

The lesson today focused on working with formulas and solving for specific variables.  We showed an example from the movie "Hidden Figures" to see how a particular formula was used to solve a complex problem in the space program.  We then went through 4-5 examples together before getting started on the assignment.

Our lesson today focused on working with two types of right triangles.  These special right triangles have properties that can be used to make several longer right triangle problems much shorter.  We went over the patterns observed in 45-45-90 triangles and the patterns in the 30-60-90 triangles.  This pattern has to be seen multiple times in order to be memorized, so we went over 5-6 examples together before getting started on the assignment.

We continued our work with similarity today by taking a look at the side-splitter theorem and the angle bisector theorem.  Both of these ideas involve different figures that are divided proportionally.  We went through 5-6 examples together before the students got started on their homework.

We continued our work with word problems today by going over a few more types of problems and how to write the rational expressions for them.  After a couple of practice examples, the students got started on the assignment.

Our lesson today focused on how to use the pythagorean theorem to determine the type of triangle that is involved using only the side lengths.  We also talked about how to approximate the value of radicals so that the numbers can be used in a variety of practical applications.  The students then took a short radicals quiz before getting started on their assignment.
