Geometry assignment; 9/30

We went through the last section in chapter 2 today:  Planning a proof.  More examples of how proofs work and the necessary steps for completing them were modeled and then practiced together.  The students then got started on their assignment towards the end of the period.  Tomorrow will be a review day of working with the entire list of chapter 2 topics.  Our chapter 2 test will be on Thursday.

We spent time today going over some of the problem areas that students had encountered on their recent quiz.  We then did a few more word problems together before getting started on a review assignment.  The students have a chapter 2 test on Thursday, so we will be reviewing tomorrow as well.

Geometry assignment; 9/29

Today's topic dealt with how to handle perpendicular lines in proofs and calculation problems.  We went through our notes on this section and handled several of these types of problems together.  The students then had the last part of the period to get started on their assignment.

We went through a review entry task today before beginning our lesson.  Today's topic dealt with writing and solving equations for word problems.  We went through a few note problems together before then going through 2-3 homework problems together as well.  The students then spent the remainder of the time working on their assignment as they worked through each word problem.

Geometry assignment; 9/26

We got back our chapter 2 quiz today and went over that before starting on today's lesson.  We focused on more angle calculation problems today and how to write equations for them.  We went over a few problems together in the shortened periods and then had about 10 minutes to get started working on the assignment before class was over.

We went over a quick entry task today to review before taking the quiz.  We then spent the remainder of the period taking the chapter 2 quiz over sections 2-4 to 2-8.  After the quiz, the students got started working on their homework assignment.

Geometry assignment; 9/25

We went over a new section today dealing with special pairs of angles.  We worked with complementary angles, supplementary angles, and vertical angles both in proofs and with some calculation problems.  The students then got started on their homework before the end of the period.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 9/25

We continued working with the distributive property today.  The next topic involved working with the inverse of sums, which ultimately means using the the distributive property on an expression with the value of -1 outside of the parentheses.  All the rules about distribution still apply.  The only thing that students need to be careful of is to carry the negative sign all the way through the parentheses.
Once we went over several examples together, the students then got started on their assignment.

Geometry assignment; 9/24

We continued our study of geometric proofs today by going over the homework and doing one more proof together before taking our chapter 2 quiz.  After the quiz, the students then got started on their homework assignment.

We spent time today revisiting the distributive property now that we have talked about rational numbers.  Working with fractions, decimals, and integers and how they are used with the distributive property is what several of the examples we went over included.  We also worked with factoring out rational numbers as well.

The students then got started working on their assignments.

Geometry assignment; 9/23

We continued working on geometric proofs today by going over our homework and then taking a look at section 2-3.  We proved two theorems today -- the midpoint theorem and the angle bisector theorem -- and practiced more geometric proofs in the process.  The students then worked on their assignment towards the end of the period before reviewing conditionals at the end of the period.

We continued working with rational numbers today by going over the principles of dividing with rational numbers.  We worked on identifying reciprocals, and then reducing fractions once they were multiplied.  Division is just multiplying by the reciprocal, and that is the skill that we worked on today.

Geometry assignment; 9/22

We reviewed the concept of algebraic proofs today with our entry task and by going over the homework.  We started the process of explaining how geometric proofs work.  We went over 4 examples together in class before getting started on our homework.  New concepts introduced today included the transitive property, the substitution property, the reflexive property, and how the angle addition and segment addition properties can be used in proofs.

We continued working with rational numbers today.  Our topic in class was multiplying with rational numbers.  The examples that we covered included what to do with positive and negative numbers, how to multiply and reduce fractions, and how to handle multi-step problems.  The students then got started on their assignment at the end of the period.

We continued our work with deductive reasoning and proofs today by showing how 2-column proofs work using algebra concepts.  These algebraic proofs will form the basis for how geometric proofs are set up.

Geometry assignment; 9/18

We went over the Chapter 1 test today before getting started into our lesson on deductive reasoning.  We covered if-then statements, counterexamples, converses, and biconditional statements today, going through several examples in the process.

We continued our work today with rational numbers by focusing on subtracting them.  Working with the double negative signs that this involves is what we went over together and then practiced in class.  The assignment involved solving 3 more triangle puzzles as well as some questions out of the book.  We will have a quiz tomorrow on working with integers and fractions, both adding and subtracting them.

We introduced the topic of deductive reasoning in class today with a couple of video clips and some notes on the aspects of deductive reasoning.  The students then worked on solving several logic puzzles together to work on their deductive reasoning skills.

After going over the homework and entry task today, we got started with today's lesson that involved more work with rational numbers.  Today's focus was specifically on adding positive and negative numbers, and being able to graph those results.  We went through several examples before getting started on some mental math triangle puzzles that the students used to review their skills.

After going over our homework and entry task, we went through a lesson today dealing with rational numbers.  The main topic dealt with a review of how to work with rational numbers (fractions) as questions come up about comparing their value, adding and subtracting them, and reducing them to the simplest form.

Geometry assignment; 9/12

We went over some homework questions today before beginning the lesson.  Today's lesson involved an activity in which students made drawings of various geometric figures.  After drawing them, the students then constructed 3-D models of the drawings.


Homework:  finish the drawings that the students did not complete and then complete the other side of the activity worksheet.

Geometry assignment; 9/11

We went over several angle addition homework problems before getting started on today's lesson.  Today's topic focused on several postulates and theorems in geometry.  We demonstrated these together with some fishing line, bobbers, and cardboard planes while taking some notes on the postulates and theorems.  We will use these ideas more and more as the year goes on.

We then got started on our homework assignment before leaving class.

Geometry assignment; 9/10

We went over the Chapter 1 quiz to begin with today before getting into the lesson.  Today's lesson focused on two things:  how to bisect an angle using a compass and then how to do calculation problems involving the angle addition postulate.

The angle addition postulate is one that will be used extensively throughout the year, so we will work on this several more times throughout the first few chapters.

The lesson topic today involved working with various types of formulas.  The goal was to be able to take any formula and use the given information to arrive at an answer.  We worked through several examples of different formulas, making sure each time to use the correct units when needed.  The students then got started on their homework assignment for the latter part of the period.

Today's lesson focused on learning the symbols and notation for working with angles in geometry.  There were several vocabulary words that we went through, as well some angle construction activities.

Today's lesson focused on the beginning of working with various types of equations.  We demonstrated what an open, true, and false equation was.  We then began to work with equations to find the correct solution set.  This involved doing the same thing to both sides of the equations:  add, subtract, multiply, or divide.

We reviewed a couple of problems dealing with the midpoint and distance formula before taking the quiz today.  The students had the period to work on the quiz, and when they finished they got started on their assignment.

The students spent some time today going through an entry task and reviewing their homework from the weekend.

We went through an entry task of some more practice drawing of geometric figures.  We also spent some time going over a few distance formula homework problems.

Today's lesson focused on the midpoint formula and how to use it in a variety of problem types.

We went over a few warm up exercises and then went over the homework to begin the period.

Today's topic dealt with using some algebra graphing skills and knowledge of right triangles to determine the distance between two points on a graph.  We derived the distance formula together and then went over a few examples together before the students got started on their homework.
