Honors Algebra 2; 1/31

We went over 3 more factoring questions on an entry task to start the period.  The students then took the rest of the period to take the factoring unit quiz.

We went over a few more similarity word problems together to start the class off.  Each one involves making a drawing and setting up a proportion.  The students practiced a few on their own as well during the lesson before getting started on the review assignment.  The answer key to the review assignment will be posted on canvas later on this afternoon.  The quiz on chapter 6 is tomorrow in class.

We started our next unit today:  inequality and similarity.  There are several algebra skills that we will be working with in this unit, so today's lesson was a review of one of those skills.  Today we reviewed how to work with ratios and proportions, both solving them and setting them up.  A key factor was to be able to reduce the ratios into the simplest form.  After 4-5 examples, the students got started on their assignment.

We spent today reviewing the different skills that we have been working on with polynomials.  Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and factoring are all skills that will be on tomorrow's quiz.  We spent some time working with partners at the beginning of the period before getting started on the review assignment towards the end.

We continued our work with similarity today by taking a look at how to handle similarity word problems.  We went over 3-4 different types together before getting started on the assignment.  For each one of these problems, the students had to draw a picture and then set up a proportion from the numbers provided.

Honors Algebra 2; 1/29

Our lesson today focused on factoring the sum and difference of cubes.  The pattern for these trinomials was derived through few trial problems that we did.  We also went over how to factor trinomials in general that are not perfect squares.  This is a skill that is a review of what the students learned in algebra, so hopefully it is something that they are still well acquainted with.

Today's lesson continued our work with similar shapes by adding shapes that overlap and determining how to use the perimeter ratio.  We went over 3-4 examples using these concepts together before the students got started on their assignment.

Our work today focused on going over the homework questions on kites from yesterday's lesson and then reviewing for tomorrow's test.  We worked as partners for a portion of the time, working on 4 sets of problems that cover the entire chapter.  The students then got started on their review packets to finish off the period.  The answers to these packets will be posted on canvas later on this afternoon.

Honors Algebra 2; 1/28

We continued our work with polynomials today by taking a look at how to factor using patterns of perfect squares.  We went through 4-5 examples of how to work with the perfect squares to determine what would factor and what would not factor.  We also demonstrated the importance of dividing out the greatest common factor first in factoring polynomials.  The students then got started on their homework.

We continued our work with similarity today by going over what a similarity statement is and how to determine if shapes are similar.  We showed how to set up equal ratios of corresponding sides and how to calculate unknown sides using a scale factor.  After 3-4 examples together, the students got started on their assignment.

We wrapped up our unit on quadrilaterals today by taking a look at kites.  These shapes have some unique properties that we took a look at in our notes, and then used to work through different types of calculation problems.  We went through 3-4 problem examples together before getting started on the homework.

Honors Algebra 2; 1/25

Our work today focused on multiplying polynomials in a variety of settings.  This familiar skill has a few different common methods of use, so we modeled each one to see which one the students are most comfortable with.  We also went over 3 shortcuts of multiplying polynomials that students can use in a variety of problem settings.

We continued our work with ratios and proportions today by taking a look at the different properties of proportions, how to use various types of drawings and proportions, and how to use scale models to figures out actual distances.  We went over a few examples of each before getting started on the assignment.

Our lesson today focused on how to work with trapezoids and midsegments of trapezoids.  We went over the basic shape and properties of a trapezoid before going through 3-4 examples of how to calculate both base lengths and the length of the midsegment.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We continued our work with polynomials today by taking a look at how to write polynomials from drawings and how to add and subtract polynomials.  We went through 3-4 examples together before getting started on the homework assignment.

We continued our work with ratios today as we went over how to use the ratios in triangles and rectangles to calculate their dimensions, areas, and perimeters.  We went over 4-5 examples of these types of problems before getting started on the assignment as a group.

We started our unit on polynomials today by going over several vocab words that pertain to working with polynomials.  Words like degree, term, ascending order, descending order, factor, and evaluating polynomials were all ones that we took a look at in today's lesson.  After 5-6 examples together, the students then got started on their assignment.

We began our unit on similarity today by taking a look at how to work with ratios and proportions.  We went over examples of ratios with the same units and those with different units that need to be converted.  We also went through 3-4 examples of how to solve proportions by cross multiplying.  The students then got started on their assignment.

The students got back their complex numbers quiz today and had a chance to ask any questions that they may have had.  We also reviewed a few concepts involving matrices as well together.  We went over how to find the inverse of a matrix and also how to multiply matrices together.  The students then had the bulk of the period to work on their second review for the final exam.

Our goal today was to review the various topics from chapter 5 that we worked on last week.  We went over the 4 different examples of concurrent lines that are found in triangles.  We also went over a couple of calculations involving medians and the relationships they form inside a triangle.

Our lesson today involved working with a variety of complex numbers and equations.  We went through how to test solutions to see if they worked with equations, and also how to write equations from given solutions.  The last skill was demonstrating how to solve equations that involved complex numbers.

Today's lesson dealt with the hinge theorem and its converse.  This concept involves two triangles that share two pairs of congruent sides.  From this scenario, different conclusions can be made about the relative size of the remaining sides and angles.  We went through 3-4 mental math examples before the students got started on their assignment.

Our lesson today focused on working with multiple parallel lines.  We went through 2-3 problems illustrating the relationships between the parallel lines and the segments they cut off on different transversals.  We also went over what a midsegment of a triangle is and how it can be used to solve various problem types.

We continued our work with complex numbers today by taking a look at a few other operations with these numbers.  We learned how to graph and find the absolute value of complex numbers.  We also worked out problems dealing with equations, multiplying, and dividing with complex numbers.  The students then got started on their assignment.

The lesson today focused on the triangle inequality theorems.  We went through how to determine the longest and shortest sides of triangles using only the angles, and also the largest and smallest angles using only the sides.  We also showed how to determine the range of side lengths that are necessary in order for a triangle to form.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We spent time today introducing how to work with imaginary and complex numbers.  We went through what an imaginary number is and how to add, subtract, and multiply these types of numbers.  We also demonstrated the patterns that this value of i has when raised to a variety of powers.

The lesson today focused on how to graph and adjust the graphs of radical expressions.  We went over horizontal and vertical shifts, stretches and shrinks, and reflections of the parent graph over both the x and y axes.  After 5-6 examples, the students got started on their graphing assignment.

Our topic today involved working with the concurrent lines involved in triangles.  We went over perpendicular bisectors and medians today.  We demonstrated how to draw them and how to use the relationships that they have to solve some calculation problems.
