We turned in the chapter 12 entry tasks and review assignment to start the period.  The remainder of the period was spent taking the chapter 12 test.

Assignment:  none;  extra credit puzzle option

Honors Geometry; 6/5

Today's work focused on reviewing the 4 transformations that we have covered in this chapter and going over how to work with a couple new types of rotation diagrams.  Much of the period was spent working on the chapter 14 review in preparation for the test tomorrow.

Assignment:  Chapter 14 Review packet

Geometry; 6/1

Our topic today was working with similarity between solid objects.  We used some skills from our previous chapter to find both the area ratios and the volume ratios of various shapes to see how they relate to the scale factor.  We went through 3-4 examples before getting started on the assignment.

Thursday, May 31, 2018

Geometry; 5/31

Our study today focused on the volume and area of spheres.  We went over the two formulas that are involved with this shape, and also took a look at hemispheres as well.  The problems either started with the radius and then went towards volume and area, or they started with volume and went back to area or radius.  We worked on both types.

Assignment:  section 12-4;  page 500-501;  WE 1-12, 16, 18, 19

Honors Geometry; 5/31

The topic today involved geometric rotations.  We went through how to decipher the notation and then figure out the points for the image.  We went over 3 rules that we will work with involving rotations, all with multiples of 90 degrees.  We also distinguished how clockwise and counterclockwise are shown with the rotation notation.

We started our next unit of study today:  area and volume of solids.  Today's topic was how to work with prisms of different base areas.  We went over what a lateral area is and how to determine its value.  Finding the total area and volume of prisms were also new skills that we walked through together.

Today in class the students took the chapter 14 test on transformations.

We spent today going over a few more concepts involving solid objects and the ratios of areas and volumes.  The students worked to get their formula notecards in good order as they started to work on their review assignment.  The majority of the period was spent working on the review.

Geometry; 5/16

Our work today centered on taking a look at 3-4 different types of drawings in which all the transformations can be performed on.  This was really just some more practice with labeling transformations and being able to interpret the rule notation that we have using with various drawings.  The students then spent the remainder of the period working on another transformations review in getting ready for tomorrow's test.

Assignment:  Transformations Review #2

Honors Geometry; 5/16

Our topic today involved taking a look at similarity and solid objects.  This was much like what we did with areas.  We went through 3-4 examples to show that the scale factor can be determined from a variety of dimensions on a figures.  The ratio must always be the same for the objects to be similar, however.  The other ratios that we looked at then showed that any area ratio was equal to the scale factor squared, and the volume ratio was equal to the scale factor cubed.  The students then started using these relationships as they did their homework.

Geometry; 5/15

Our topic today focused on how to compose two different transformations together.  The notation and the order of these changes is a little different from what we are used to, so we went through 3-4 examples together before getting started on the homework.  Part of the work centered around reviewing for the test on Thursday as well by working on dilations and translations.

Honors Geometry; 5/15

Our topic today involved the surface area and volume of spheres and hemispheres.  We went through 4-5 examples of how to use these formulas, showing the students how to interpret different types of drawings as well.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Geometry; 5/14

Our topic of study today was to take at look at both line and rotational symmetry.  We worked through a variety of pictures to illustrate each type of symmetry, and saw the patterns necessary to calculate the number of lines of symmetry and the order of rotational symmetry.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Honors Geometry; 5/14

We continued our study of 3-D shapes today by taking a look at how cylinders and cones work.  We went over the area of the bases, the lateral area, the total area, and the volume of each of these shapes in our lesson today.  They area quite similar to prisms and pyramids, so after 2-3 examples, the students got started on their assignment.

Geometry; 5/11

The transformation topic today consisted of learning about rotations.  We went over the rules and notation involving rotations, and practiced 4-5 examples together before getting started on the assignment.

Honors Geometry; 5/11

We continued our work with volume and area of solid figures today by taking a look at pyramids.  New vocab terms of lateral edge and slant height were introduced to our drawings and calculations as we worked through 2-3 examples together.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Geometry; 5/10

Our work today focused on the next transformation in our study:  dilations.  These changes involve figures either enlarging or contracting to form similar shapes.  The similar shapes have a scale factor associated with them, so we went through how to determine the scale factor from both drawings and coordinates.  After 3-4 examples and drawings, the students got started on their assignment.

Assignment:  Dilations worksheet

Honors Geometry; 5/10

The students got back their chapter 11 test today and had a chance to look over any mistakes they had made.  We then started our next unit of study:  area and volume of solids.  Today's topic was how to work with prisms of different base areas.  We went over what a lateral area is and how to determine its value.  Finding the total area and volume of prisms were also new skills that we walked through together.

Geometry; 5/9

We continued our work with transformations today by taking a look at translations.  These movements are just slides in a particular direction.  We introduced the notation that indicates a translation, and also how this movement coincides with our study of vectors from earlier in the year.  We went through 2-3 examples together before getting started on the assignment.
