Geometry assignment; Feb. 27/28

These are early release days for parent/teacher conferences, so this class only meets once over these two days.

We turned in our chapter 8 review assignment to start the period, and then the rest of the period was devoted to taking the chapter 8 test on right triangles.

We reviewed our exponent rules together by going over homework and then going through a few more examples together.  We then took a short quiz on the exponent rules that we have been working on this week.

After we went over the homework, we spent a little time reviewing the topics for our chapter 8 test tomorrow.  There is a review assignment out of the book whose answers appear below.

We continued working on rules of exponents today by going over our homework and going through an entry task.  We then began the process of working with monomials and how to multiply and divide them.  The process uses exponents quite a bit, so the exponent rules are still used heavily.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 25

We continued working with the three trig functions today as we solved right triangles and went over a few word problems.  Defining angles of elevation and angles of depression was a key point in the lesson, as was being able to solve a right triangle for all of its sides and angles.

We kept working with rules of exponents today, adding three more to our exponent tool box.  We went over raising a power to a power, raising a product to a power, and raising a quotient to a power in today's lesson.  The students then had time to get started on their homework before the end of the period.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 24

We introduced the sine and cosine ratio today in working with right triangles.  The ratios complete the trig functions that we can use to solve any right triangle.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; Feb. 24

We went over our quiz today that we took on Friday and then got started on a new unit.  We will be working with polynomials in this unit, but we need to do some review work on exponents before we get to polynomials.  We went over how to multiply and divide with exponents today, as well as how to handle negative exponents.  We will be working on these tomorrow as well.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 21

We went over our homework together and reviewed ideas of how to use a scientific calculator in finding tangent ratios.  The main topic of the notes today was working with word problems and setting up diagrams involving trig functions.  We also looked at a few more shortcuts involving special right triangles.

We went over our homework today and did a final review before taking a quiz today on graphing linear inequalities.  After the quiz, the students then got a start on their homework assignment for the weekend.

After going over the homework, we introduced the concept of trigonometry ratios in class today.  The first ratio that we will talk about is the tangent ratio.  Initial calculations and problem solving techniques were demonstrated for the tangent ratio in class before students go started on their homework.

This was our second day of work on systems of inequalities and how to graph them.  The students will take a quiz on graphing linear inequalities tomorrow in class.

We continued working with special right triangles today, focusing on more complex problems that involve combining two special right triangles.  We still worked with the 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangle shortcuts, as the students got more opportunity to become familiar with the relationships in these triangles.

Continuing our work with linear inequalities, we introduced the topic of graphing systems of inequalities today.  Graphing two lines at once on the graph and then shading to find the solution is what the students worked on in class today.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 18

There was no school yesterday due to President's Day, so there was no assignment.

We started section 8-4 today, talking about special cases of right triangles.  The students learned the relationships found in 45-45-90 triangles and 30-60-90 triangles.  The shortcuts that these triangles involve allow the students to solve more types of right triangle problems.

Yesterday was a holiday, so there was no school and no assignment.  We spent today continuing to work on linear inequalities as the students worked on getting the equations in the correct form before graphing them.

Today we took a quiz on the first half of chapter 8.  After the quiz, the students worked on a review assignment on the Pythagorean Theorem.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 13

We worked through several homework problems together on the Pythagorean Theorem today before starting the next section on the converse of the pythagorean theorem.  The main skill today was to use side lengths to classify triangles as either obtuse, right, or acute.  We we worked several examples before getting started on the homework.

We went through some SMI testing in class today.  After finishing test, the students worked on a review worksheet that we will use as we start the next unit.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 12

We went over homework today and then kept working on the pythagorean theorem problem types.  Today's topic was dealing with word problems and more complex diagrams.  We went over several problems together before getting started on the homework.

We went over our review sheet at the beginning of the period to make sure the kids didn't have any more questions.  We then spent the rest of the period taking the systems of equations test.

Once the students were done, they had the chance to work on an extra credit worksheet if they chose to.

Geometry assignment: Feb. 11

We introduced the pythagorean theorem today and began to use it to solve triangle problems.  The use of the theorem is one that many students have seen before, but we will develop it's use more completely in this chapter.

We spent time reviewing two different types of word problems today before getting started on our review sheet.  We then spent the remainder of the period working on the review sheet.  The students were given the answer key to the review sheet so they could check their answers.  The test on systems of equations is tomorrow.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 10

We went over our radical expressions quiz to start the period today.  We then continued to review similar triangles and working with the geometric mean.

We will begin our work with right triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem tomorrow.

(I think during one of the periods, I said to do the odds on the back.  2nd period can choose to do even or odds, as I believe I forgot to mention which ones to do on the back.)

We went over our quiz from last Friday to start the period today.  The systems of equations test will be Wednesday this week, so we will be going over several more word problems before then.  We reviewed three different types of word problems today before getting to work on our homework.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 7

We took the last of our perfect squares quizzes today.  I'll average the top two scores when I put them in the gradebook.  We also took a short quiz on working with radical expressions.

Geometry assignment; Feb. 6

We continued working on similarity among right triangles today, going over how to use the geometric mean to solve problems with right triangles.  The three formulas that involve the geometric mean were introduced and used for the first time.

Short quiz tomorrow on perfect squares and working with radical expressions.

We continued working on word problems today, focusing on coin problems and ones that involve different rates of admissions.  We used two equations in each one of these problems and then solved the system of equations to come up with the answer.

We began the first section of chapter 8 today by discussing the similarity among right triangles.  We cut out different triangles and reviewed the altitude, hypotenuse, and legs of a right triangle.  We then worked with the similarity between three different triangles.

We worked with a different type of word problem today:  the rental rate problem.  We also worked more problem examples involving money and age issues.

We went over our chapter 7 test today in class.  We then covered the topics of simplifying radical expressions and factoring our perfect squares.  We will be using this skill quite a bit as we move into chapter 8 dealing with right triangles.
