Algebra 10-12 assignment; 12/17

We continued our work with compound inequalities today by taking a look at how to work with disjunctions.  Between conjunctions and disjunctions, the graphs of compound inequalities now have a complete picture.  We went through 5-6 examples together before the students got started on their homework towards the end of the period.

We will cover one more section tomorrow before then taking a quiz over sections 9-1 to 9-3 on Friday.

Assignment:  Section 9-2;  page 408;  #17-30 all,  #32, 33, 37-43 all

Indirect Proof worksheet

1.  triangle ABC is scalene;  or triangle ABC is not equilateral
2.  a < b
3.  angle X < angle Y
4.  Doug is not a Canadien
5.  Kim is a violinist
6.  CX is a median of triangle ABC
7.  don't do
8.  Assume a is parallel to b
Reason:       angle 2 is congruent to angle 3    (vertical angles congruent)
angle 1 is congruent to angle 3    (corresponding angles congruent)
angle 1 is congruent to angle 2    (transitive / substitution)
     m angle 1 = m angle 2 contradicts the given that m angle 1 does not equal m angle 2
Assumption is wrong, therefore a is not parallel to b

9.  Assume angle J and angle K are both right angles
Reason:      OE is congruent to OE   (reflexive)
triangle JOE is congruent to triangle KOE   (AAS)
OJ is congruent to OK    (CPCTC)
this statement contradicts the given that OJ is not congruent to OK
Assumption is wrong, therefore angle J and angle K are not both right angles

10.  Assume OE does bisect angle JOK
Reason:    angle 1 is congruent to angle 2   (def. of bisect)
OE is congruent to OE    (reflexive)
triangle JOE is congruent to triangle KOE   (SAS)
JE is congruent to KE   (CPCTC)
This statement contradicts that JE is not congruent to KE
So the assumption is wrong, therefore OE does not bisect angle JOK

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 12/16

Geometry assignment; 12/16

We continued working on triangle inequalities today by exploring the way that two triangle inequalities work.  We went over the Hinge Theorem today by showing how both the SSS and SAS inequality theorems work.  We did several sample problems together before the students then got to work on their homework during the last part of the period.

Geometry assignment; 12/15

We went through section 6-4 today in class, discussing inequalities in a single triangle.  We related the size of the angles to the sides opposite them, and vice versa.  We also spent time going over the range of sizes that a side lengths can be in a triangle.  The students then got a start on their homework before the end of the period.

Assignment:  Triangle Inequality worksheet

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 12/15

We started chapter 9 today, as we are going to go a little out of order to be able to finish up a particular topic before Christmas break.  We will work on the first part of chapter 9 this week, which has a good breaking point in the middle.

We focused on how to work with set notation today and demonstrated how to write both roster notation and set builder notation from a statement or a set of numbers.  We also worked on finding the intersection and union of two different sets.

Geometry assignment; 12/10

We introduced the concept of indirect proofs today by showing the students the 4-step process of how these proofs work.  We went through several examples together, as indirect proofs are quite different from the direct proofs we have been using throughout the year.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 12/10

We continued our work with polynomials today by showing how to work problems that involve (2 x 3) and (3 x 3) multiplication grids.  These binomial-trinomial problems and trinomial-trinomial problems need to be broken down into smaller steps in order to be solved.  We went through several examples together before the students got started on their homework.

Geometry assignment; 12/9

We continued our work with triangle inequalities today by taking a look at inverses and contrapositives.  These terms were added on to what we had learned earlier in the year when dealing with if....then statements and converses.  We went over several examples together, and also demonstrated how Venn diagrams can be used to answer these types of inequality problems.

We continued working with multiplying polynomials today by showing how to take a couple of shorts cuts in our work.  Multiplying the sum and difference of the same two terms allows a shortcut that we modeled with several problems together.  We also showed how to multiply binomial squares using the foil method.  The pattern observed when collecting like terms can also be used as a shortcut in doing these problems.

Algebra 10-12 assignment; 12/8

The students got their quizzes from Friday back today.  Quiz corrections are due by Thursday for those students who would like to improve their grade.

We began the process of learning how to multiply polynomials today.  We went over two of the first types of problems that the students will face and then introduced the FOIL method of multiplying polynomials.  This method will be used several times throughout the rest of the year, so it is an important one to know and be able to use well.

Geometry assignment; 12/8

We began the shortest chapter in our book today -- chapter 6.  We will complete this chapter before Christmas break.  The first topic dealt with inequalities in geometry and introduced the concept of a proof involving inequalities.  We went through several examples as a class together before the students worked on their homework assignment during the last part of the period.
