Honors Algebra 2; 9/28

We spent time today introducing another form of a line equation:  the standard form.  We went over a few conversion examples, as well as showing the initial steps of how to graph the various types of line equations that we have introduced so far.

We spent time today introducing how to work with supplementary, complementary, and vertical angles.  We went over the definitions of these terms and how they look in working with various types of proofs.  We went over a couple of calculation questions together before the students got started on their assignment.

We continued our work with linear equations today by taking a look at how to work with point-point equations and the point slope equation of a line.  We went through 4-5 examples of how to convert back and forth between the various line equations that we are working with as well.  The students then got started on their assignments.

We spent time today introducing the concept of how proofs work in geometry.  The skill that we worked on today was how to use algebra proofs.  We went through 3-4 examples before getting started on the assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/26

We started a new unit today:  linear equations and absolute value.  We went over the foundations of how slope works and how the slopes of lines are calculated.  We also went over the slope intercept form of a line and the point slope form of a line.  These foundational tools are ones we will use to build on as the unit goes on.

Our focus today was how to create a biconditional statement and what that phrase refers to.  We also introduced the terms inverse, contrapositive, and negation today in regards to how to work with deductive reasoning statements.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Today's lesson focused on reviewing some of the important terms for proofs and conditional statements that we have worked on so far this chapter.  We did some practice proofs on canvas that the students could check their answers against, and then the students spent a good portion of period working on the quiz review assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/25

The students turned in their review sheets and entry tasks for the solving equations unit to begin the period today.  They then took the rest of the period to take the solving equations unit test.

Our lesson today focused on the phrases of deductive reasoning.  We went through how to identify the hypothesis and the conclusion of a statement.  We also learned what a counterexample is and how to write a converse of an if...then statement.  The students then got started on their assignment.

We continued our work with proofs today by taking a look at how theorems can be incorporated into this process.  We went through the midpoint theorem proof and the angle bisector theorem proof together, modeling each step along the way.  The students then got started on their assignment at the end of the period.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/24

We reviewed several different types of problems through our entry task and going over the homework together.  Once all the questions were answered, the students then got started working on their review assignment for the test tomorrow.

We continued our work with the study of logic today by taking a look at how inductive reasoning works.  There were several examples of how to find patterns and then develop a rule to explain that pattern.  We went through what a counterexample is and how to come up with one.  The students then got started on their assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/21

The lesson today focused on how to solve absolute value inequalities.  We went through a few different examples showing a less than (conjunction) and greater than (disjunction) graph so the students could connect to what they have previously learned.  We then went over a couple of special cases of absolute value before getting started on the homework.

We began our second unit today:  Deductive reasoning in geometry.  We went through a few examples of the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning before getting started on the assignment:  using deductive reasoning to solve various logic puzzles.

We continued our work with proofs today by taking a look at how to do geometric proofs.  We walked through 3 together as an introduction before the students started their assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/20

Our work today focused on how to solve absolute value equations and knowing the different properties of absolute value expressions.  We went through 5-6 examples together before getting started on the homework.

We spent the first part of the period working turning in various review sheets and our chapter entry tasks.  The students then spent the rest of the period taking the chapter 1 test.

We continued our work with conditional statements today by taking a look at what biconditional statements are and what they refer to.  We also spent some time introducing how to work through algebra proofs using the properties of algebra.  The students went through 3-4 examples with me before getting started on their own assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/19

Our work today focused on how to solve compound inequalities.  The two types are conjunctions and disjunctions.  We went through both and showed how graph and illustrate each one.  We also went through some special exceptions to these rules and how to graph them.

We wrapped up our study of chapter 1 today by reviewing some of the angle pair vocab words and the calculations that go with them.  The students then spent the rest of the period working on their chapter 1 review assignment.

We continued our work with deductive reasoning today by taking a look at the language of reasoning.  We went over the terms hypothesis, conclusion, converse, counterexample, and if-then statement today in class.  All these will be used as we move into the process of writing proofs with statements.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/18

Today's class time focused on working to solve the word problems that the students wrote yesterday.  The collection of problems involved choosing 20 of the problems and solving them to see if they matched the author's answer.  Extra credit is available for those who choose to work all 32 problems.

Our lesson today focused on how to find the area and perimeter of a variety of plane figures.  We worked with squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles.  Each formula was demonstrated 2-3 times before getting started on the assignment.

The students got back their chapter 1 test today in class and were able to ask questions about what they may have missed on the test.  We then got started with chapter 2 and the study of deductive reasoning in geometry.  We went over the difference between deductive and inductive reasoning, using examples of each to illustrate the concepts.  The students then got started on a collection of logic puzzles as their assignment.

We went over the homework from the weekend, answering questions about word problems and inequalities.  The remainder of the period was spent writing word problems.  The assignment was detailed on canvas and then the students had the opportunity to work with a partner to create 4 unique word problems.  We will work on solving these word problems in class tomorrow.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/13

The students got their solving equations quiz back today and were able to ask any questions on it that they had.  The lesson today involved demonstrating the different rules to keep in mind when solving inequalities.  We revisited some of the set notation from the first unit while going through 3-4 examples together.

Today's lesson involved working with classifying different types of polygons.  We went over how to name them and how to determine if polygons are convex or concave.  The students got started on their assignment towards the second half of the period.

Today's lesson focused on several postulate and theorems that we have covered in this chapter.  We demonstrated several different ideas using some props at the front of the room.  The students then got to work on finishing their constructions assignment or the assignment for today.

We continued working today on how to calculate problems involving different angle pairs.  We worked on making drawings today of various scenarios and then solving the algebra equations.  The students got started on their assignment after we went over 4-5 examples.

We continued our work with different types of word problems today.  Today's lesson focused on formula problems, interest rate problems, and problems involving consecutive integers.  Each type of problem was demonstrated before the students got started on their assignment.

The students got their Chapter 1 quiz back today and were given an opportunity to go over any questions that they may have had.  We then got started on the 2nd half of the chapter today by taking a look at different ways that angles are classified.  We went over several vocab words and drawings today in our lesson, getting the students familiar with various new types of angles and angle pairs.  The kids got started on their assignment during the second part of the period.

We continued our work with solving equations today.   We went over how to work with % increase, % decrease, clearing fractions, and clearing decimals today.  After an example of each, the students then got started on their assignment.

We introduced topic of solving equations today as we got started on our second unit.  We went over some basic tools of solving equations that included addition, subtraction, working with reciprocals, using common denominators, and navigating word problems.  We will continue to work with this tomorrow as well, adding new tools along the way.

Our work today focused on working with different types of angles.  We went through how to measure angles, classify angles, name angles, and calculate with angles.  All of these skills were demonstrated before the students got started on their assignment.

The students took the Set Theory test today in class.

We continued our work with segment calculations today by taking a look at how to calculate the midpoints of segments.  We went over both the midpoint formula and the distance formula in today's lesson, as well as several sample problems of how to use them.

We went over a couple more vocabulary words together today in notes before working on a tissue box activity.  This involved answering several questions about a 3-D shape in which the students practiced their vocabulary and labeling skills.  When the students were done with the activity, they got started on their homework assignment.

Honors Algebra 2; 9/4

We spent the class time today reviewing the main topics from our first unit of Set Theory.  The students were able to see again the types of questions that will be on the test and go over the different set notations one more time.  The rest of the time was spent working on the review assignment in class.

We continued our work with symbols and calculations in geometry today.  The topic that we focused on today was how to work with congruent segments and calculations.  We went over the ruler postulate and the segment addition postulate in determining the lengths of various segments.  We also worked through a few examples of graphing in order to determine if segments were congruent or now.

We continued working with the segment addition postulate today by taking a look at a variety of different calculation problems.  We went over how to interpret drawings and write algebraic equations for them.  We used the terms midpoint and bisect in our examples as well.  The students got started on their assignments towards the end of the period.
