Geometry assignment; 4/29 and 4/30

These are both half-days due to the first round of state SBAC testing.  Each day involves only 3 periods.

After we went over our homework, the students took their chapter 13 quiz covering sections 13-1 to 13-4.  Once the quiz was over, the students got started on their assignment.

Geometry assignment; 4/28

Today's lesson was a little bit review and a little bit more on vectors.  We talked about how to add vectors together and what a vector force diagram looks like.  We went through a few examples and then reminded the students about calculating the equations of circles.  The students then got started on their homework.

We continued working with systems of equations and solving them by elimination today.  The examples we went over today dealt with changing both equations before eliminating the variables.  After going through several together, the students then got started on their homework.

Geometry assignment; 4/27

We continued our study of coordinate geometry today by taking a look at how vectors work and how they are used to determine locations.  We went through several problems together before getting started on the homework assignment.

We continued our work with systems of equations today by introducing the third method of solving these systems:  solving by elimination / addition.  We went through 4-5 examples together before getting started on the homework assignment.

Geometry assignment; 4/24

We reviewed the concept of slope today and how it relates to parallel and perpendicular lines.  Parallel lines have equal slopes while perpendicular lines have slopes that are negative reciprocals.  Using these two concepts to confirm various properties about geometric shapes is what the 3 examples were about that we went over in the notes.  Graphing points to determine the figure and then confirming perpendicular or parallel lines on the figure are the skills we worked on today.

We continued working with solving systems by substitution today, and included a few word problems as well.  The examples that we did involved translating words into equations and then solving the system.

We continued our work with the distance formula and the equation of circles today.  We went over several problems involving graphing circles from their equations and how to use the distance formula to confirm various geometric shapes.  After the examples in class, the students got started on their assignment towards the end of the period.

Geometry assignment; 4/23

We continued our work with coordinate geometry today by reviewing the concept of how to work with the slope of lines.  These concepts are review from algebra, but they will be used as we go forward in this chapter.  The concepts we talked about were positive, negative, zero slope, undefined slope, and how to calculate slope from graphs and from two points.

We worked on the 2nd method of solving equations today:  solving by substitution.  This is a method with multiple steps, so we went through a few problems together both in the notes and in the homework.  The students then got started on their assignment at the end of the period.

Geometry assignment; 4/21

We started a new unit today dealing with coordinate geometry.  We will review some algebra concepts during this particular chapter, as well as learning some new geometry skills to add to the algebra graphing concepts we already have studied.  The focus of today was working with the distance formula again and using it to determine the equation of a circle.

We started on new unit on systems of equations today in class.  We went over what a system was, how to check a solution for a system of equations, and also how to graph a system of equations.  There are several ways to work with systems and we will continue to emphasize graphing as we move forward.

We took our chapter 11 test today on areas of polygons.  The students had the entire period to work on the test.  There was an extra credit option at the end of the period for the students to work on if they so chose.

We went over our homework today that dealt with geometric probability and then covered a couple of review problems together.  The rest of the time was spent working on the review sheet for the test that will be on Monday.  The review sheet answers will be posted on this site this weekend.

Geometry assignment; 4/16

We covered our final topic in chapter 11 today by going over how to work with geometric probability.  We used various examples from segments to pie charts to circles to rectangles to calculate the geometric probabilities for various events.  After going through the notes together, the students then got started on their homework.  We will work on a review sheet tomorrow in preparation for the chapter 11 test on Monday.

We covered the last topic of the types of variation today by going over combined variation.  The students saw a few examples of this type of variation together before they then got started on their assignment.  The assignment also included a review sheet in preparation for tomorrow's test on Chapter 12, functions and relations.

We covered the topic today of how to work with area ratios and similar figures.  Using some previous knowledge of similarity ratios, we were able to show that the scale factor is equal to the perimeter ratio.  The area ratio is also related to the scale factor by being the square of the scale factor.  We went through several problems together before the students got started on their homework.

We worked on another type of variation today in class:  joint variation.  This is closely related to direct variation, only with more variables involved.  We worked through 4-5 problems together with some whole group practice before getting started on the homework assignment.

Geometry assignment; 4/14

We spent another day today working on arc lengths and sector areas.  We went through different examples of how to use these formulas to determine the radius, central angles, and diameters of circles.  We also showed how to determine the area of shaded regions when they involve sectors and triangles.

The topic today focused on inverse variation problems.  As with direct variation, we spent time seeing how to calculate a constant of variation and then use this constant to plug values into the formula we created.  We went through several examples together before getting started with our assignment.

Today's topic focused on the how to calculate arc lengths and the areas of sectors.  These terms are related to the circumference and area of circles and are essentially fractions of these measurements.  We went through several examples together before getting started on our assignment.

Geometry assignment; 4/9

We continued working with areas of circles and their circumferences today.  Today's focus was on how to determine the area of shaded regions that involve circles, squares, and rectangles.  We went over 3-4 sample problems together before getting started on the assignment.

Today our focus on functions centered on working with word problems.  We went through several examples of how to write a function from a word problem and then use the function to answer a question.  The students then got started on the homework towards the end of the period.

We discussed a new topic today in dealing with area and circumference of circles.  We had covered this briefly during our chapter on circles, but today we focused on two ways to do these types of problems:  using the exact value of pi or the approximate value of 3.14 or 22/7.  We went through several examples together before the students got started on their homework.

We have a quiz up through section 11-5 on Friday.

We continued our work with regular polygons today by going over how to work with polygons with non-short cut angles.  The process was the same, yet the tool we needed to use was our trig ratios.  We went over a couple of problems together before getting started on the homework.

We continued our work with functions today with the topic of how to work with the graphs of functions.  We used a given function and domain to come up with a set of ordered pairs to construct a graph.  We then used the vertical line test to see if the graph was indeed a function.  After going over a few samples together, the students worked on their assignment for the remainder of the period.

Welcome back from Spring Break!  We continued our study of the area of figures today by going over how to figure out the area of regular polygons.  We introduced the new terms of apothem and radius of polygons in our problems today.  We went over 3-4 problems together before getting started on the homework.
